Fractionated Laser

Fractionated Laser

Fractionated laser therapy has revolutionized the way we treat acne scars, pigmentation and photoaging. Fractionated laser only treats a fraction of the skin which provides patients with minimal downtime and risks, but maximizes the results.

  • This treatment can be applied to acne scars, chicken pox and traumatic scarring.
  • Fractionation can also be applied to rejuvenation and is also used to treat photoageing, freckles and wrinkles.
  • Fractionated laser can also be combined with BroadBand Light (BBL) for superior results– a treatment known as Fractionated Photo Rejuvenation.
  • Fractionated laser treats only a fraction of the skin enabling rapid healing and minimal side effects.
  • Healing time can be as quick as 36 – 48 hours.

Fractionated Laser Therapy is a quick and effective laser procedure with little downtime.  It is a treatment used for improving the overall appearance of your skin.  The procedure is performed at Westside Dermatology and can be custom tailored to address a wide range of skin conditions and desired outcomes.

Acne scarring and scarring from other conditions such as chicken pox, surgery and trauma can all be treated with laser. In severe cases of scarring we recommend a series of 3 treatments.

Pigmentation and freckling can also be treated with fractionated laser. In certain clinical situations a combination of BBL with fractionated laser therapy can be used, to form a new treatment we call Fractionated Photo-Rejuvenation. This combination treatment will dramatically improve skin texture and tone in just one to two treatments.

Photo-ageing and wrinkles can also be treated with fractionated laser. For severe cases of photo-ageing and wrinkling, we recommend a series of 2-3 treatments for optimal results.

Pro-fractional is a laser made by Sciton that uses a tiny beam to treat thousands of pinpoint areas of your skin.  The laser used in these systems has a very high attraction to the water in your skin.  When the laser energy is applied, it ablates (vaporizes) a layer of skin to a precisely-controlled depth.  As only a fraction of your skin is directly treated with the laser, the surrounding untreated tissue promotes rapid healing.  This initiates the body’s own wound healing response to create new collagen, which adds firmness and resilience to the skin.

Pro-Fractional has the unique ability to penetrate very deep into the skin, but with very little heat damage to surrounding tissue.  This combination allows for efficacious collagen remodeling (due to the deep treatments) and a high safety margin (due to low thermal damage) on all skin types.

This combination makes ProFractional one of the safest, yet most effective resurfacing lasers available today.

Most skin areas can be treated.  Popular treatment areas are the face and neck, although many people also treat the chest and hands.  Your treating physician can adjust the laser settings appropriately for the specific area being treated.

Laser treatments are performed at Westside Dermatology in one of our laser suite. A topical anaesthetic is applied and allowed 60 minutes to incubate.  The skin in the treatment area is then cleansed and your eyes will be protected with safety shields.  A laser handpiece will be positioned gently on the skin.  When the laser energy is applied, you will hear a rapid succession of snapping sounds as the computer-guided handpiece scans the laser beam over the treatment area.   The handpiece will be moved around to adjacent locations until the entire desired area has been covered.  The procedure normally takes 20 to 30 minutes.  Following the procedure a topical ointment will be applied and aftercare will be advised.

Pro-Fractional laser therapy is widely regarded as a comfortable procedure, usually tolerated with the use of a topical anaesthetic cream.

Immediately following the procedure you may experience mild redness and a sensation resembling a moderate sunburn.  Your treating physician will advise you on specific after-treatment care recommendations dependant on your skin type, which may include analgesics and application of an ointment to keep the skin moist.

You may be given skin care products and instructions on how to use them.  Your skin will be sensitive to ultra-violet light after the procedure, so it is important that you must avoid direct sun exposure until fully healed or until sunscreen is tolerated.  It is recommended that you should always use sun block to avoid solar damage and premature aging of your skin.

Other important aspects of after care is to use a gentle cleanser morning and night to remove any debris and old skin.  A nourishing moisturiser is recommended as skin heals quicker when moist.  No picking or rubbing of the skin as this can cause scarring.  Active ingredients should be avoided for at least one month or until tolerated due to irritations.  Cool compresses or thermal water sprays can be used to soothe the skin however ice should be avoided.

If the patient has a history of cold sores it is advised that the patient notify the treating physician so that an anti-viral medication can be prescribed.

For superficial treatments, complete healing typically occurs within a few days and most patients usually feel comfortable enough toget back to normal activities and apply makeup two or three days after the treatment.  There may be some swelling that wills ubside within several days following the treatment. For deeper treatments such as acne scarring and wrinkle reduction, healing may take a few extra days. Your treating physician will inform you of the best compromise between results and down time.

When fractionated laser treatment is performed to treat conditions such as pigmentation, effects are noticed within a week of treatment. During the subsequent weeks following your treatment, you may notice a general tightening effect. However, the true benefit of a fractionated laser treatment is the collagen remodeling thatoccurs during the 3 to 4 months following your treatment.

For conditions such as acne scarring and wrinkle reduction, it may therefore take several months to see maximum benefit from your treatment.

Fractionated laser treatments are widely regarded as a safe procedure.  As only a fraction of the skin is affected, even the deeper treatments can be very safe.  Your treating physician can provide more information on the risks associated with any type of medical procedure.  One of the best ways to reduce the possibility of complications is to follow the after-treatment care instructions and follow-up schedule provided by your health care provider.  Infection can be common however by maintaining strict after care and advising the treating physician of any history with cold sores will help reduce the possibility of infection and ensure proper healing.

Excellent results can be obtained in just one treatment, however the number of treatments may vary from patient to patient.  Some patients seek the minimal downtime advantages of very conservative treatments and choose to extend their therapy over several sessions (3 to 4).  Others desire more rapid results and are able to tolerate longer downtime, and thus pursue a more aggressive single treatment.  Your treating physician can personalize a plan based on your specific needs and may choose to combine fractionated laser therapy with other aesthetic procedures to further personalise your treatment and results.

Fractionated laser resurfacing has truly revolutionized laser surgery.

Depending on the patient’s downtime, their skin type, and the severity of the condition ,the parameters of the laser is adjusted accordingly. Thus the precise depth and ‘fraction’ of skin treated is under absolute control. This in turn minimizes risks, and controls recovery with still gaining optimal results.
