Birthmarks and mole removal

Skin conditions that appear at or near birth are referred to as ‘birthmarks’. These may range in colour from red to brown. Treatment will depend on the type of birthmark and the age of the patient. It is important to rule out cancer or pre-cancerous changes in moles and blemishes before cosmetic treatment.

Important facts

  • There are many different types of moles including junctional, compound, intradermal and congential moles. Blemishes include seb keratoses- warts, sunspots and freckles.
  • The majority of moles are benign (non cancerous), however if treatment is sought on cosmetic grounds, then excision or laser may be possible.
  • Birth marks include naevi (moles or variants of moles) or vascular birth marks which are red in colour
  • The majority of birthmarks can be treated with laser surgery
