Rejuvenation of the hands

A youthful appearance is often reflected on the face and neck area, however hands are the first point of physical contact between people, and a simple gesture such as a handshake can give a lasting impression. Over time hands age both intrinsically (loss of collagen and skin tone, increased wrinkles) and extrinsically due to UV photodamage (increased pigmentation, rough sun spots).  The aim of hand rejuvenation is to firstly treat any precancerous lesions, as well as improve skin texture and tone.

A combination of treatments is available for hand rejuvenation each designed to treat precancerous lesions, fade pigmentation and sunspots and improve skin tone.

Precancerous lesions, often characterised by rough scaly areas can be treated with Photodynamic Therapy (PDT).

For simple isolated cases of sunspots, a gentle freeze with liquid nitrogen can be used- a treatment known as ‘cryotherapy’.

Mild pigmentation - treatments with a series of BBL/ IPL can improve superficial areas of pigmentation. We recommend a series of 2-3 treatments for the best results. For more information on BBL treatments click here.

moreFractional treatments, as the name suggest, treats smaller areas of the skin.

Moderate pigmentation and raised areas of pigmentation - a combination of BBL and Fractionated laser is needed for deeper pigmentation. This process is what Westside Dermatology terms Fractionated Photorejuvenation. Raised spots will require an ablative or fractionated laser for optimal results. These lasers safely resurface the skin, allowing new skin to regenerate. Laser treatments will also stimulate collagen formation, improving skin tone and diminishing wrinkles over time.

We recommend a series of 2-4 treatments depending on the severity of aging.

The high UV index in Queensland contributes to premature aging, pigmentation and precancerous sunspots. The regular use of a high factor sunscreen is paramount in prevention of photoaging. Dermatologist can compound a solution of Alpha Hydroxy fruit acids, or a Beta Hydroxy acid solution to help prevent recurrence of pigmentation and further improve skin texture.

BBL hands - $320 per treatment (2-3 treatments advised)

Fractionated Photorejuvenation (Fraxel/ Profractional and BBL combined) - $380 per treatment. (2-3 treatments advised)

Photodynamic Therapy - $600 to $800 per hand

**Hand rejuvenation is considered as cosmetic and procedures are NOT covered under Medicare. A rebate applies if  precancerous sunspots are treated via cryotherapy.

An examination by a specialist dermatologist is necessary prior to any treatments. We often diagnose incidental skin cancer lesions or precancerous lesions at the time of consultation, and it is important to treat these lesions appropriately.

Patients frequently request treatment of the hands and forearms after face laser. Advances in fractionated lasers over the past few years have made treatments simple, safe and effective.

For mild and superficial pigmentation of the hands, a series of BBL treatments will improve things significantly. For rough scaly areas, associated with pigmentation and wrinkling, a combination of fractionated laser and BBL- Fractionated Photorejuvenation is the treatment of choice. For each of these modalities, 2-4 treatments are advised, depending on the degree of photoaging.
