Brisbane Specialist Acne Clinic
Acne is a common disorder affecting up to 90% of teenagers and up to 25% of men and women in their 20s and 30s.
At Westside Dermatology we are experienced in treating acne in people of all ages. Our dermatologist treat over 1800 cases of acne per year – from children through to adult acne. Every patient is carefully assessed and treated by a Specialist in the field of skin. We treat many cases of persistent acne which are resistant to over the counter and prescription treatments. We are conscious of the emotional distress that acne can cause and will guide you through the healing process via an individualized treatment plan for your type of acne.
Severe cases of acne can be seen through our Brisbane Specialist Acne Clinic or through our Priority One Clinic - waiting times are generally less than 10 working days and we currently run up to three clinic sessions per week. We encourage that you consult your General Practitioner for referral to these clinics.
Our unique 4 step approach to acne management.

1. Acne Treatments
Every person’s skin is unique and acne treatments are carefully individualized. We address potential issues such as hormonal imbalance, and dietary factors, and offer a combination of regimes from vitamin A creams, conventional prescribed medications, and newer treatments such as alpha hydroxy acid / and beta acid peels. Many cases of acne can also be treated with red and blue light LED therapy as part of a combination regime.
Severe cases of acne are treated with a combination approach, including the use of vitamin A tablets.
In some situations we investigate any potential underlying cause for your acne via a series of compressive tests including hormone profiles.
2. Product review
With acne prone skin it is essential to use the right products- as part of our treatment program we review and advise on the most appropriate product to use for your skin type.
3. Prevent and Address scarring
A combination of creams, sunscreen and daily regime will help reduce the amount of scarring. Red light LED treatment can also reduce acne scarring.
For persistent scarring, newer Fractionated LASERS may dramatically improve scars. Your dermatologist will advise you on the best way to approach things.
4. Maintenance skin care program
Individually prescribed to keep you blemish free and looking great. We formulate a combination of products suited for your skin type as part of your maintenance program.

What causes acne?
Both men and women produce naturally occurring hormones such as testosterone. This in turn stimulates the oil glands in the skin to produce a substance called Sebum. Keratin, produced by the skin, in combination with sebum results in proliferation of the bacteria which in turn results in inflammation.
There are many factors which can aggravate ache, including hormonal imbalances, environmental factors (heat and humidity),stress and diet. Treatments are aimed at addressing the factors which cause acne- that is decreasing sebum production, reducing the amount of keratin shedding, and decreasing both inflammation and the bacteria in the sebaceous glands.Daily skin care is very important in the treatment of acne – your dermatologist will best advise you
on the correct products to use and will individualize a treatment plan to suit you. After your acne treatments are complete, we offer advice on how to best care for your skin in the future- ensuring that you achieve the best possible long term result.
Did you know that diet may contribute to acne?
Though not the sole cause of acne, dietary factors may flare up acne. Eating a healthy and well balanced diet may reduce the severity of acne.

Did you know?
- Comedomal acne- black heads and white heads are best treated with a combination of topical Vitamin A creams and Glycolic acid peels?
- Sunscreens form an integral part of every skin care regime. For acne prone patients a light non-comedomal (non-acne forming) sunscreen is recommended. Ask your dermatologist about which is the best sunscreen for your skin type.
