Microdermabrasion treatments

Microdermabrasion is a treatment which exfoliates the top surface layers of the skin, removing dead skin cells. This is classed as a very superficial treatment, however can be a useful method of treating blackhead acne. It can also improve skin texture, however for consistent results microdermabrasion will need to be repeated at frequent intervals.

The procedure is performed by a vacuum extractor that brings the skin in contact with a diamond coated head that abrades the surface of the skin. This head is passed over the treatment area several times. Older machines use microdermabrasion crystals to achieve the same result.

Microdermabrasion has been used for over a quarter of a century, and whilst we acknowledge their role in treating mild skin diseases, newer, more effective treatments are available.

Chemical peels

... such as glycolic acid/ AHA peels are more cost effective, quicker to perform and more effective than even the newest Diamond Head Microdermabrasion machines. The use of different concentrations of chemical peels can also provide a customised prescription module for the patients condition.

Microlaser peels

... provide even more control compared to microdermabrasion and chemical peels. The exact depth of ‘peel’ can be achieved with laser- this gives the dermatologist absolute control of the depth needed to achieve the clinical results.

Fractional laser

... induces thousands of micro-punctures whilst leaving surrounding tissues intact. This allows the skin to heal much faster than if the entire skin was treat at once. Fractionation stimulates collagen production in addition vaporizing both superficial and deep pigmentation. It promotes the skin’s healing process to create new, tighter tissue, with improved skin texture.

Microdermabrasion has a place in treating mild forms of acne and improving overall skin texture. Chemical peels are more cost effective for the patient and treatment is complete within 10-15 minutes at most. Fractional and microlaser peels take treatments to a much higher level.
